The meaning of sport changed over time, and competitions became big spectacles for the public, each taking on different meanings and associations depending on the context: In the Kaiserreich, sporting competitions were for rich men to participate in and watch; in the Weimar Republic, for the general population. Under the rule of National Socialism, sporting competitions served a racist ideology, and during the Cold War, they symbolized a showdown between East and West. Fortunately, that's all in the past: The Grünau regatta site will in 2023 serve as one of the venues for the Special Olympic World Games in Berlin.. What is the significance of sport today?
